Relatively little research has been undertaken on host community reactions to tourism development in former slave trade sites. Using the social exchange theory, this paper sought to investigate residents‘ perceptions of tourism development in Danish-Osu, Ghana. The study employed a mixed methodological approach that included in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and face-to-face interviews with household heads. It was found that residents’ support for tourism development is affected directly or indirectly by their socio-demographic characteristics. This suggests that the general analyses of social exchange theory could be applied to the perceptions of residents of Danish-Osu towards tourism development.
