According to a survey conducted as part of this study, it was found that derivative education is overlooked or neglected in Korean language classes. Furthermore, it was identified that most textbooks cover only a few
affixes, except for a few examples of teaching materials. This situation has arisen because several affixes have various meanings or are not productive in Korean and are few in number. This study discloses the problems that can result from not distinguishing an affix from a derivative, citing the following prefix derivatives: ‘DutOt (over + clothes), CheotInsang(First + impression), HotEbul (one layer + blank)’. The study also examined the necessity of educating students about derivatives. A prefix in a derivative causes syllable restructuring like a compound word. However, if a prefix derivative is taught as a single word for convenience of teaching, the possible change in the phoneme should be explained as an exception. Accordingly, students cannot learn about systemicities and regularities some Korean words have. Moreover, this problem is generally identified during a beginner course but may also carry over to intermediate and advanced courses. Therefore, derivatives should be taught gradually starting in beginner courses in consideration of the connections and systemicities in Korean language education.
