우리는 지금 어떻게 전통철학을 연구할 것인가?

국문 초록

우선 이 글에서 필자는 미국 내 주자학, 특히 철학에 초점을 맞추어 그 연구동향을 소개하고자 한다. 나아가, 그들의 연구경향을 ‘보편과 특수’라는 키워드로 살펴보고 현재 한국에서 주자학을 연구하는 데 있어 우리를 되돌아보는 계기로 삼고자 한다. 80년대 초반 출간된 주희와 신유학이라는 논문집을 일별한 뒤, 지금까지 영미권에서 단행본 형식으로 주희를 다룬 연구서를 소개할 것이다. 그런 뒤, ‘중국철학’ 연구자들로 그 외연을 넓혀 로저 에임스, 데이비드 니비슨, 청쭝잉을 중심으로 그들의 영향권 아래 진행되는 현재 미국 내 중국철학 연구경향을 살펴보고자 한다. 필자는 그들의 연구경향을 우선 보편성과 특수성으로 요약하고 그 이면에 실은 그들이 직면하고 있는 현실적인 상황들이 있음을 상기시키고자 한다. 물론, 현재 한국에서 주자학 연구자들이 부딪히는 상황이 그들과 다르다고 하더라도 ‘보편과 특수’라는 키워드는 전통철학을 연구하는 방법론적 쟁점일 수 있다고 생각한다. 그럴 때, 현재 한국에 주자철학 연구자들이 집중해야 할 과제는 ‘언어’, 즉 고전의 개념어들과 우리의 사유방식 사이에 놓인 간극을 메우는 꾸준한 노력이어야 한다고 생각한다.

영문 초록

In this paper, I will introduce some research trends of Chinese philosophy in America. Furthermore, I will summarize the trends in terms of the universal and the particular and examine methodological approaches in studying the philosophy of Zhu Xi in Korea. After glancing over Chu Hsi and neo-Confucianism, which was published in early eighties, I will review some monographs that cover Zhu Xi and his thought. Then, I will examine three major figures of Chinese philosophy in America, namely, Roger Ames, David Nivison, and Chung-ying Cheng, which are strongly influencing current research trends in America. I can summarize their trends as tension between the universal and the particular, veiling the field of the survival of the fittest, which means a real environment that they must urgently communicate with others, i.e., major trends of the western philosophy in America. In spite of a different situation with which we encounter, I believe, the key words of the universal and the particular can become a methodological issues for approaching traditional intellectual resource of Zhu’s philosophy. In order to solve the issues, first of all, we should be able to investigate the task to fill a gap between classical language and contemporary one. All kinds of philosophical issues are on the matters of the day. This is the reason why all of classical language should be replaced into the language of the age.
