After the introduction, this article delves into Calvin's interpretation of Romans to find out some lessons applicable to the present Korean churches. Calvin prefers to use (1) the "lucid brevity" method in his exposition of Romans for the common good of the Church. He presents Romans as (2) an instruction and guide for everyday life. Calvin understands Romans to be teaching that (3) human beings are sinners before God the Creator, that (4) God's sovereign grace has been given to the sinners, that (5) the works of human beings cannot be the reason for justification, and that (6) the Law is the criterion by which the "works" will be judged. According to Calvin, Romans affirms (7) that the Law has been fulfilled in Christ, that (8) Human beings are justified by faith alone, and that (9) there is no impartiality about the way of salvation. Although the believers are justified before God by faith, (10) they cannot reach the perfect status of sanctification in this world, experiencing the conflict between flesh and spirit within themselves. Calvin observes in Romans (11) that God's sovereign will cannot be fully understood by the human beings due to their limited appreciation of God's boundless wisdom. Thus, they should be humble before God in obeying God's will revealed in the Bible. In Korean churches, Calvin's understanding of Romans and his way of interpreting Romans can be the standard for preachers and teachers who read Romans for the common good of the Church.
