영문 초록

Envy is an emotion which feels sad at the good of another. Naturally and unavoidably, human beings, with bitterness, would feel his own deficiency at the sight of close friends' happiness and possessions. 'Shadenfreude' which is rejoicing others' sorrow is also a twin sibling of envy. Ultimately envy pursues others' falling down. In this sense it is also a moral vice. In the Bible, it is identified as a sin out of which, hatred, fight, division, and even murder arise. Christian church has regarded it as one of seven deadly sins since Gregory the Great(450-604), which Christian tradition, it is called In society plays important role in causing envy. Even capitalistic society uses peoples envy to have as nice things as other people do. People's egalitarianism also plays an substantial role in fostering envy in the 'Have-Nots'. They are envious of 'the-Haves” for the unequal possessions, which, they 0hink, could caused unfair distribution in unjust social system. Envy is quite often confused and used interchangeably with jealousy. In strictly distinguishing, however, they are different concepts. Jealousy is almost the same as covetousness. If it sees what others have good things, it hopes to have those. It sometimes plays some positive role in causeing the jealous to make effort to get them. It is not nearly so insidious as envy in that it does not oriented to destroy the object. Unlike jealousy, envy causes great damages on the envied as well as the envious themselves, and the community they belong to. While Cinderella could be used as an image for the sufferings of the envied, Othello and the sour grapes for could be for those of the envious. Especially, the sour grapes symptoms is more negative mechanism for the envious to solve their envy, which finally leads to impotence and sloth. In order to overcome and get rid of envy, one has to guard one's lips from backbiting, grumbling, gossiping, ets. In positive way, first of all, one has to turn one's eyes on themselves, find out good things that one has already received from God, appreciate them, and make most of them. Secondly, one is required to get the view that friends are not rivals to be surpassed or destroyed, but members who make up only one body. If one gets this kind of view, one can see the good talents that friends as resources for the whole community to meet with difficulty. Finally, the most effective alternative to envy is love. Love does not envy, for it accepts friends itself. Love rejoices with those who rejoice. To possess God's love is the most ultimate and successful way to govern the envy.
