What has been fascinating about the Korean church is not only its extraordinary growth. The fascination even is doubled for the Reformed community because of its predominant Presbyterian influence. This study integrates the two phenomena in order to submit them to a socio-cultural inquiry. Success of the Korean Presbyterian Church is at least partially due to that it, among other Christian traditions, was most effective in balancing the extreme theological, social, and political tendencies in coping with ever volatile and rapidly changing circumstances of the initial stage of modernization. Korean Presbyterian Church was not only committed to the Bible and the historical Christian confessions, but at the same time highly conscious of the historical and socio-political responsibility. It greatly helped the nation to endure the despair of colonialism, devastation of war, and suffering of poverty. However, implied in this claim is an opposite thesis that loosening the
balance has contributed to the stagnation and decline of the church in recent years. Korean church is facing serious challenges from both internal weakness and external criticism from various sectors of society, particularly from the intellectuals, cultural elites, and mass media. It is critical for Korean Church to cope with the crisis by recovering the biblical principle of faith and life. This study explores the wisdom and insight that Calvinist doctrines and historical experience of Europe and North America might render in assistance to the recovery of the lost balance. After surveying the historical examples of how the Reformed faith had overcame the crises, the hopeful three movements which have developed in Korea last two decades are briefly reviewed. Christian worldview movement, Christian school movement, and Christian Ethics Movement are merely hopeful signs that the Reformed faith has began to grow in Korea with modest but viable impact. They are good examples of how to recover the lost balance in faith and life. They point the way to develop the public theology which will help Korean Church to overcome the crises by restoring the lost balance.
