The basis for Calvin's exegetical method lies in his understanding of Scripture. Like other major figures of the Reformation, Calvin holds the orthodox view that Scripture is not only a collection of ancient writings authored by human beings but also the revelation of God that is embodied by the Spirit. For Calvin, Scripture is more than a simple deposit of knowledge. Instead, in Scripture God accommodates himself through the Spirit in order to meet the limitations of human capacity. Scripture is authoritative because it is the vehicle through which the Spirit speaks. The foundation of Calvin's understanding of Scripture is the linguistic connection between the work of the Spirit and the text. Calvin believes that the illumination of the Spirit does not arise independently from the original meaning of the text. He rejects the spiritual interpretation of Scripture and stresses the literal and intertextual sense of Scripture. The intention of the Spirit and that of the human author of Scripture are very closely related. He, therefore, reads the text not for hidden meanings but for the meaning inherent in the author's words and interprets it in the light of their linguistic and historical context, in order to find the mind of the author. In order to discern the author's mind, Calvin makes great use of a historical and grammatical approach. This includes discerning a whole spectrum of rhetoric devices in the text. Since the Spirit is also the author of Scripture, the task of the interpreter involves asking what the Spirit is saying through the text.
