The characteristics of trickster merchant tales and the meaning of the transmission. Dongnam Journal of Korean Language & Literature 30. The aim of this paper is to observe characteristics and the meaning of the merchant as a trickster, among the characters in the Korean oral folktales. This study began from awareness that there had never been a single discussion made on a trickster merchant as a major topic. The trickster studies so far, mainly have dealt with conflicts between the higher and the lower social classes. In fact, between characters of the lower class, they could play tricks on each other. King Sukjong the Great and Park, Mun-su the secret inspector inspect the people, and people such as Kim, Seon-dal and Jeong, Man-seo roam around. However, merchants travel around for retail distribution and economic activities to support their family. The merchants play tricks as well as the higher social rankers do, but the purpose of travelling is obviously different from the high rankers. This paper focuses on the differences and analyzes the characteristics and the meaning of trickster tales in which a merchant in the lowest social class is the main character. Firstly, using multi-tricks and sexual elements, mainly misunderstandings in linguistic expressions on sex induces laugh, and an ethical message is suggested that an excessive sexual activity ought to be controlled. After that, competition of growing rich between the trickster packmen and dupes, using a single trick, is mentioned. This competition is caused by money, eliminating morality and ethics; it proposes the necessity of moral values that the society should aim at and cultivates ethical consciousness about wealth. Finally, the double trick of the packmen and dupes develops even aggression, not just fun. At this point, we could see that the social rankers who enjoy folktales have biased ethics over respect for life. This emphasizes antisociality ofdupes; This idea is from the social rankers who want to justify tricks of the pedlars. As aforementioned, the shape of the trickster is involved with the double categories, boundaries; it can contain both of negation and affirmation, or surpasses the values of negation and affirmation. This kind of harmful acts can be understood by the historical scars of the Korean. Consequently, the role of packmen as a trickster in the folktales is still a matter of debate.(Inje University)
