영문 초록

A country's industrial structure generally indicates development in the low-technology and labor-intensive industries and then, it gradually progresses into capital-intensive and the knowledge-intensive industry. Japan has indicated a faster improvement in its industrial structure than all Eastern countries, and to the extent that its improvement in domestic industry is now fully developed. This thesis focuses on the stages of Japanese industrial improvement, particularly on the domestic industry, with an aim to analyze the characteristics of that domestic improvement, and to elicit specific implications. Japan's industrial progress can be divided into three stages: export-oriented industrialization, overseas expansion, and progress in the domestic industry. Japan has reached a mature stage with respect to improvement of the domestic industry after undergoing overseas expansion. The current improvement was realized through that Japanese companies were capable of producing lucrative intermediate goods and, during overseas expansion, integrated their domestic production systems and overseas facilities, which facilitated the construction of a strong network between overseas production activities and domestic activities. In case of South Korea, industrial improvement is quickly progressing, but the industrial structure is currently still weak. Its progress, however, indicates an increased volume of imported spare parts for machinery. In order to engender real improvement in the South Korean domestic industry, the ability to develop high-technology and to produce value-added intermediate goods should be soon emerge. In this respect, Japanese progress in the domestic industry suggests many factors that act as an example for the South Korean industry.
