A Review of Interventions to Teach Communicative Rejecting for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

국문 초록

의사소통적 요구하기와 거부하기는 자신의 기본적인 욕구나 선호도를 표현하기 위하여 비장애 아동들이 처음으로 보이는 의사소통 기술들이다. 비장애 아동들은 이를 표현하기 위해 특별한 중재없이 말을 습득하지만 많은 발달장애 아동들은 특별히 고안된 중재없이는 기본적인 욕구를 표현하기 위해 말을 습득하지 못하고 비언어적 행동들에 의존하게 된다. 이러한 비언어적 행동들은 발달적으로 적합하지 않거나 사회적으로 적절하지 않은 문제행동으로 표현되곤 한다. 의사소통적 거부하기는 벗어나기(escape)와 회피(avoidance) 기능으로서의 거부하기라는 두 가지 하위범주로 나누어 볼 수 있는데 벗어나기(escape)는 한 대상에게 현재 가시적으로 제공되는 물건이나 활동으로부터 빗어나기 위해 사용되는 경우이고，회피(avoidance)는 아직 일어나지 않은 사건을 변하도록 해 주는 경우이다. 본 선행연구 분석은 장애를 지닌 개인을 대상으로 의사소통적 거부하기를 가르친 연구들의 문헌 분석에 목적을 두었다. 분석대상논문은 1980년에서 2008 년까지 국외의 특수교육 관련 전문 학술지에 게재된 9편의 중재연구였다. 9편의 논문 모두 벗어나기(escape)기능으로서의 의사소통적 거부하기를 가르치기 위한 중재결과를 보고 하였으며，회피(avoidance)기능으로서의 의사소통적 거부하기를 가르친 중재는 없었다. 9편의 논문 중 6편은 선호하지 않는 물건이 제시되었을 때 그것으로부터 벗어나기 위한 의사소통적 거부하기를 가르친 논문이었고，3 편은 요구한 물건과 다른 물건이 제시되었을 때 그것이 요구한 물건과 다른 물건임을 표현하기 위한 기능으로서의 의사소통적 거부하기를 가르친 논문이었다. 9편의 논문의 연구내용과 특성을 자세히 살펴본 결과 분석된 연구들은 중재기간동안 모두 효과적이었음을 보고하였지만 중재이외의 상황에 일반화되지 않은 연구들도 상당수 보고 되었다. 현재까지 이루어진 연구들에 대한 종합적 분석과 앞으로의 연구 주제들이 논의되었다.

영문 초록

Mands, of which requesting and rejecting responses are considered subclasses, are the first emerging communication functions that alJow children to express their wants and needs. While typically developing children develop speech without specifically designed intervention, many children with developmental disabilities are likely to rely on prelinguistic communication forms that are socially and developmentally inapproptiate or unacceptable until symbolic forms of functional communication are taught. The purpose of this analysis is to provide a general picture regarding communication interventions to teach communicative rejecting for individuals with disabilities. An analysis of literature on teaching mands indicates that although there is an abundance of research addressing teaching communicative requesting behaviors, rarely have studies attempted to teach communicative rejecting. This paper reviews nine studies which taught communicative rejecting for individuals with disabilities between 1980 and 2008. Findings indicated that these training effectively taught communicative rejecting. Comments on current reseach and relevant issues for future research are discussed.
