After Kristeva's introduction of “intertextuality” and Barthes' “The Death
of the Author” as well as some post-modern theories on the textuality and
writing, it is widely acknowledged that there is no original text or author
and a literary text is just a re-writing of the existing texts. In this
respect, parody, a kind of re-writing, has been re-considered as a new
type of writing, not as a comical revision of an older text.
And Lewis Carroll's Alice which is made up of parody and re-writing,
also could be a typical and pioneering model case of post-modern writings.
Jeff Noon's Automated Alice, a parody or re-writing of Carroll's Alice,
shows another example of re-writing. However, as a parody of parody,
Automated Alice not only confirms the new functions of Carroll's parody,
but goes a step further to show that parody or re-writing is an essential
form of creative writing in the post-modern era. This paper examines the
function of parody as a criticism and creative writing in Carroll's Alice and
how in Jeff Noon's Automated Alice, it is also reflected and could be
interpreted as a possible mode of post-modern writing.
