문화코드로 본 우크라이나와 벨로루시인의 의사소통 방식

국문 초록

우크라이나와 벨로루시는 유사한 자연조건과 역사적 출발의 동일한 뿌리를 갖고 있으며, 700여년에 걸친 긴 주변국의 지배를 경험하면서 다양한 문화들과 접촉하는 복잡한 과거를 가졌다는 공통점이 있다. 우크라이나나 벨로루시가 모두 다 민족 국가이면서 언어적, 종교적, 문화적으로 지역적 상이성이 존재하게 된 오늘의 모습은 그 직접적인 결과였다. 본 연 구는 두 나라 국민의 언어적․비언어적 의사소통방식에서 두드러지는 문화코드들을 설정하고 그 같은 문화코드가 형성된 배경을 역사 및 사회-문화적 특성 등을 중심으로 추적하였다. 본 연구는 우크라이나인과 벨로루시인의 의사소통에서 나타나는 특성을 5가지로 정리하였다. 고맥락적인 의사소통체 계, 집단적인 생활방식 속에서도 강하게 나타나는 개인주의적인 의사표현, 위험의 회피, 큰 권력차이, 그리고 공적 영역 과 사적인 영역의 구분 등이 그것이다. 이러한 특성의 실제적인 예들을 언어적 표현이나 비언어적 표현들, 그리고 역사적 현상들과 결부시켜 보면 이상의 문화코드는 압제적인 이문화와의 접촉과정 속에서 자신들의 정체성을 지켜나가기 위해 발전시켜나갔던 공동적 경험의 산물이라고 말할 수 있을 것이다. 상호 긴밀히 연결되어 자신들끼리의 암묵적인 의사소통체계를 이루고 있는 양국인의 문화코드를 이해함으로써 이방인들은 양국인과 보다 효과적인 의사소통을 하기 위한 실제적인 적용을 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The relationship between ways of communication and national culture has been a topic of interest in area studies since the second half of 20th century. However, it has received little attention to understand national characteristics in connection with its cultural codes. Especially in the area studies on Ukraine and Belarus there is no serious study in any language on this theme. This paper discusses the major cultural codes of ukrainian and belarussian people considering how historical and cultural experiences affected in their verbal and nonverbal habits. The first part of chapter 2 is devoted to an overview on historical development of Ukraine and Belarus. It makes observation about the commonness of cultural experience of two peoples. In the second part of chapter 2 the author examines with abundant empirical cases on 5 major cultural codes of them as follows: high-context culture, individualism in collective social culture, risk avoidance, high power-distance and drawing a sharp line between public and private spheres.
