This research is aimed at comparing & considering the literary world for a father and son who were great Confucian scholars and writers in late Koryo, and its related contents are summarized and arranged by item as below.
1. Lee, Gok and his son Lee, Saek were from a poor & lowly family of Hansan, but they managed to raise their family which was developed into an illustrious family by their great descendants, such as Jonghak, Ki, and Sanhae, etc.
Kajeong was a Confucian scholar and literary man as well as a man of great merit in late Koryo and got an excellent literaryfame while making a career on his own
Mokeun Lee, Saek outdid Kajeong Lee, Gok in learning & literature. Lee, Saek was a scholar representative of the Koryo Dynasty and also a classic leaving his great footprints even in literature. He did in-depth research on Sung Confucianism, cultivated a lot of younger scholars, and greatly developed Sung Confucianism.
2. The literature by Lee, Gok and his son Lee, Saek is collected in ‘Gajeongjip’ and ‘Mokeungo’ by genre. ‘Gajeongjip’ includes 470 verses and 106 proses. ‘Mokeungo’ is also collected in a vast quantity of 55 volumes.
3. ‘Gajeong' ‘Jukbuinjeon' [Madam Bamboo´s Story] is also ‘Gajeon' [fictitious impersonation of a thing other than a person] impersonating a bamboo. As a result of analysis, this work was created to make people alert to decadent trend and dissipation of society, and to satirize and criticize villainous retainers and men of influence at that time.
The work ‘Jeolbujossijeon' was also wrought out to awaken the corrupt public morals ofKoryo society and to inspire the concept of female fidelity. Mokeun's impersonation literature[hereinafter, ’Jeon literature'] could be classified as three patterns; Its first pattern includes the story about the people who had a talent and ability but they failed to be used in the world as ill luck would have it and finally died young. ‘Songssijeon', ‘Odongjeon', ‘Parkssijeon', ‘Choissijeon’, and ‘Baekssijeon' belong this category.
Its second pattern is the work ‘Chogyejeonghyunsookjeon' which deals with the story about a character who successfully entered government service among the people of the same social standing as Sadaebu[a person of noble family].
The work described Hyunsook as a newly-emerging Sadeabu who faithfully observed the principle of loyalty and piety and ostracized a shamanist customs.
Its last pattern is the work “Jeongssigajeon"- a collection of the ancestors of a family of Sewon Jeongssi. It has a literary value in that it is the first in history of Jeon Literature.
4. Gajeong´s ‘Jeon literature' puts emphasis on fidelity on the basis of Confucian idea. Mokeun´s ‘Jeon literature' targeted Sadaebu bracket which was the same with his social status and these two scholars shared a long-standing friendship with each other. In addition, both of them made it clear that the purpose of their writings was to inform their descendants.
5. The literary value of ‘Jeon literature' created by a father and son [Gajeong & Mokeun] lies in the fact that Gajeong´s work impersonated a bamboo and his ‘Jeolbujossijeon' becomes the beginning of 'Yeolyeojeon [a story of a virtuous woman ] while Mokeun´s Jeon literature was the forerunner of ‘Ilsajeon' which had a great vogue during the Joseon period and its value is considered to be great in terms of literary history in that it was written in the form of story collection.
This research doesn´t include the comparative study as against ‘Jeon Literature' in China, but it will be dealt with later.
