As the Korean traditional designation for the swing is chyu-chyen identical with Chinese word, there can be no doubt as to the derivation of the Korean counterpart from China from time immemorial. But apart from that Chinese originated adopted chyu-chyen, and now a days standard word for the swing keune, a series of traditional dialect forms such as kundae, kunzi, kunduy, kundi, etc. are mainly distributed at the southern contemporary dialecdts.
In this paper I have endeavor to solve some problems connected with the historical word-formation and the course of its diachronic of those South-western dialect forms such as above mentioned. Under the aegis of the presumed intermediate form keundeuy(근듸), which are distributed mostly in the late 19th century Zulla-do dialect materials, I could conjecture that the historical change course would be from the stage of keundeuy to now a days various dialect variants.
From the time of Recent Korean, a folk game or play names keundu(근두), which were a sort of exercise of headlong jump were happened to associated with the act of swinging by means of sematic change, that is metonymization in the parts of South-western provinces. Therefore, I presumed that if the word keundu, might underwent some morphological devise such as suffixation -i, which were one of the most productive word-formation mechanism in regional dialects, then the original historical form could be resulted in the hypothetical *keunduy(근뒤).
As a consequence, I advocate to the effect that the various contemporary regional dialect variants above mentioned were the reasonable as well as the legitimate historical descendants from the hypothetical *keunduy(근뒤) via sometimes regular sound changes, at other times owing to the strong effects of t-palatalization, which have had its origin in the South-western dialects at the time of Recent Korean.
