국문 초록

본 연구는 16세기부터 17세기까지 서양에서 제작된 고지도에 우리나라가 처음 섬으로 나타난 형태와 유형의 변화를 도형학적으로 세분화하고 구체적으로 분류한 연구이다. 우리나라는 16게기 중반부터 서양 고지도에 섬으로 그려지고 있다. 새로운 해상항로를 개척하기 시작한 포르투갈을 비롯한 항해가와 상인들이 전달한 우리나라에 대한 섬 형태의 지리 인식은 길다란 유형으로 테이세라형, 플란시우스 · 혼디우스형이 있으며 사변형 유형의 블라우형과 상송형, 그리고 둥그런 유형의 랑그렌형 등 매우 다양하고 부정확한 형태로 과장되어 그려졌다. 이러한 유형들은 17세기 중반부터 우리나라가 섬에서 반도의 모습으로 나타나기 시작하지만 심지어 18세기 초까지 상송형의 섬으로 그려지기도 한다. 그러나 우리나라는 점차 항해가와 선교사의 다양한 지리정보를 바탕으로 제작한 마르티니 이후부터는 다양한 모습의 반도로 정착되었다.

영문 초록

This study is one of very important studies that can represent the shapes of the Korean Peninsula drawn on European Cartography as Korea started to be known in the West as well as the westerners' geographical perception of Korea. This study is significant since it shows the shapes of Korea, which emerged in the world history, as well as difference between the geographical perception of the Orient and that of the West. As Westerners had recognized Korea was initially represented as an island (Ilha, Insula, Isle) on maps and charts of the West in the mid-16th century. At that time Korea was drawn as a long shaped island, and the shape types are categorized into Teixeira-type (L.Teixeira,1595), and Plancius; Hondius type (P.Plancius,1594;J.Hondius,1606). Korea was drawn in very diverse and incorrect shapes such as quadrilateral Blaeu and Sanson type (W.Blaeu,1635 and N.Sanson,1652) and round-shaped Langren-type (H.F van Langren,1596). In the mid-17th century, Western mapmakers started to draw Korea as a peninsula formation; even in the early 18th century, however, it was represented as an island (N.Witzen,1705). Since Martini made maps based on the diverse geographical information from mariners and missionaries, Korea has been represented in a variety of shapes of peninsulas.
