Wordsworth´s works are seen in English Romantic Movement of which the roots lie in the eighteenth century. Like almost all literary fashions, Romanticism startd as a reaction of feeling against form to the nineteenth century concept of poetry as expression, an impassioned product of the poet´s mind and heart.
In his recognition of the creativeness of mental operations, Wordsworth definitely abandons the assumption that underlies most psychology of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The doctrine is expressly accepted by Locke.
According to Locke, sensations, together with reflections on them are sufficient to account for all the ideas that ever enter into one´s mind. He held that we have certain knowledge of our own existence. This we know intuitively.
Wordsworth´s poetic world is the one which exists at a particular time and the ideal self is the goal toward which he strives. The goal is the perfect of fully realized self. He was a simple-minded poet with a passion for nature. Besides, even if all worldly glory were to be gone, he would not feel sorrow for it. He was strong enough to live on in hope of immortality in his poetry.
In a section of The Prelude, Wordsworth expresses some point of view that the best and the worst, the highest and the lowest, the peasant and the philosopher, have the same power of arriving at valid moral judgements because all are gifted with one sense for moral judgements, as on eye for the sun´s light.
