What Giorgio Agamben calls the 'bare life' is life exposed to the potential for violence. This violence occurs in exceptional conditions in which the sovereign power of decision is exercised beyond the normal juridical processes. Thus we can note that the 'bare life' is created by a state of exception, and that human rights in this state are partly or fully deprived by the sovereign power. In an extreme example, Agamben points to the Jews under Auschwitz, who were completely stripped of their human rights because of the bio-political logic of the Nuremberg laws. The Jew, in the light of the new bio-political regulator, is transformed into 'bare life', and the new space inhabited by this 'bare life' becomes the state of exception, to wit, the concentration camp. In Agamben's words, the camp is the materialization of the state of exception, which is essentially a temporary suspension of the order. The problem is that such a state of exception as found in Nazi practice was not an aberration in human history. In fact, we are confronted with figures of bare life in the contemporary world as well. As an example, unlawful immigrants who are exploited by governments worldwide to assert their national sovereignty, the countless stateless people, the brain-dead bodies that bear witness to the bio-political vocation of modern politics, and so on. All these are inextricably bound with a power that excludes them insofar as they are at every instant exposed to an unconditional threat of death. This means that the concentration camps have not yet disappeared, and that, therefore, 'bare life can reappear in a variety of forms at any given moment. Thus, in the light of Agamben's concepts of 'bare life', 'sovereign power', and 'camp', this paper will examine the potential reduction to bare life that is implicit in modern liberal democracy.
