국문 초록

  본 연구는 미국 개별소비자의 온라인 거래(Online Business)로 인한 물품세 회피 Sales Tax Evasion)를 역외간 거래(Cross-Border Shopping)와 실증분석을 통하여 고찰하였다. 본 연구에서 얻은 두 가지 결론은 첫째, 물품세가 높은 지역에 거주하는 소비자들이 온라인 거래를 선호하고 있다는 것으로, 이는 소비자들이 인터넷 쇼핑을 조세회피(tax evasion)의 수단으로 간주하고 있는 증거이다. 둘째, 물품세가 낮은 지역에 인접 약여 살고 있는 소비자들은 온라인 거래를 선호하지 않는 것으로 나타났는데 이는 역외 간 거래를 선호하고 있다는 간접증거로 해석할 수 있다.

영문 초록

  This study is to analyze the relationship between retail sales taxes and Internet shopping in the US, considering cross-border shopping. In order to find the relationship, I use simple probit estimation and full information MLE as estimation methods. My analysis supports the hypothesis that consumers in counties with higher sales-tax rates are more likely to shop no the Internet, all else equal. This implies that consumers use Internet shopping as a means of evading sales taxes. In addition, consumers whose home county is adjacent to a county with a lower sales-tax rate ra less likely to use the Internet for shopping, all else equal. I interpret this as reflecting the effect of cross-border shopping.
