The images of Korea and Korean in the mind of Americans are analyzed by using a database of newspaper articles. Two kinds of articles are compared; one is to report mainly Korea in the article, and the other is to quote Korea or Korean in passing while reporting other countries or subjects.
It is found that Americans tend to recognize Korea as an unity. The separated image of each of South Korea and North Korea is formed only under limited conditions. The most prevailing image of Korea turns out to be "war, security, and dangerous place". Coming to recent days the image of Korea seems to be diversified. However, while North Korea"s nuclear problem became highlighted in the 1990"s, other interests concerning Korea retreated to the behind When Americans think South and North Korea separately, their interests vary. Economy and sports prevail for the South, while communism, dictatorship, and poverty are the dominant images for the North.
Korean-Americans are treated as a part of Korean in American"s mind. The Korean War holds some stable part of American"s memory on Korea so far. While Americans tend to think over Korea as a middle level Asian country, being related to communism takes a separate but important area of image on Korea.
