A continuing controversy in teaching English as a foreign language is whether grammar should be taught. Thus the purpose of the present study was to investigate primary, secondary, and college students" perceptions on grammar learning as part of learning English as a foreign language. The study surveyed 1,338 Korean students addressing; the necessity of English grammar learning, effective ways of learning English grammar, the degree of interest in learning English grammar, and the usefulness of English grammar learning. The survey revealed that about 70 percent of the respondents thought English grammar learning was necessary for foreign language learners, even though learning English grammar was not so interesting. In addition, more than half of the students agreed that the technical terms of English grammar needed to be taught, and that grammar rules should be memorized since English was a foreign language. Interestingly, primary school students and college students had a more positive attitude toward the role of English grammar for enhancing their communicative abilities than secondary school students. The finding that Korean students perceive the necessity to learn English grammar suggests that formal instruction and communicative language teaching be integrated through the use of grammar tasks designed to promote communicative language use.
