Purpose: The purpose of this study was to make a comparative analysis of self-concept, health promotion behavior and health status between broken home children and normal home children.
Methods: The research design was a comparative research. The instruments used in the study were the self-concept questionnaires used by Ha and the health promotion behavior questionnaires employed by Lee. Perceived health status and school physical examination records were used. Results: In the cases of broken home children, the major cause to disorganize their families was divorce, separation and death of their parents, Hypothesis 1 that broken home children and normal home children might be different in self-concept was accepted(t=-4.424, p=.000). Hypothesis 2 that broken home children and normal home children might differ from each other in health-promotion behavior was accepted(t=-3.508, p=.000). Hypothesis 3 that broken home children and normal home children might be different in health status was rejected(t=1.026, p=.305). There was no significant differences between broken home children and normal home children in perceived health status, physical condition and physical fitness. Conclusions: The broken home children were outperformed by their counterparts from normal home children in self-concept and health promotion behavior, and no significant gap was found in health status. To promote the health of broken home children and let them stay fit, it"s required to provide health education and prepare relevant programs geared toward enhancing self-concept and health promotion behavior in consideration of their characteristics.
