『논어(論語)』의 정(情) 개념을 어떻게 이해할 것인가

국문 초록

  고대중국의 정(情) 개념이 주로 특정한 상황과 관련된 사실의 집합 혹은 특정한 종류에 속하는 사물의 특질 혹은 본질을 의미한다는 기존의 해석들은 『순자(荀子)』, 『예기(禮記)』 등의 문헌에서 ‘情’이 어떻게 희로애락 등의 구체적 감정을 지칭할 수 있는지에 대해 명쾌한 설명을 제시하지 못한다. 필자는 『논어(論語)』에 나타나는 두 번의 ‘情’자 용례가 사실 혹은 특질의 측면과 감정의 측면을 아우르는 고대 중국 情 개념의 이론적 특성을 잘 반영하고 있다고 보고, 『국어(國語)』의 情 개념 관련구절들을 분석함으로써 고대 중국의 情이 특정한 상황과 관련된 사실 혹은 특정 사물의 특질 (혹은 본질)이라는 의미 외에도 사람의 마음 속 깊은 곳에 자리하고 있는 가식 없는 의견, 목표나 포부, 다양한 대상에 대한 정서적 반응 등을 지칭할 수 있다는 점을 논증한다. 이는 고대 중국의 情 개념이 윤리적 맥락에서는 ‘성격’으로 해석되어야 한다는 것을 의미하며, 성격의 일부로서 욕망과 혐오 등의 감정을 가리킬 수 있는 『논어』 ？자로(子路)？ 편의 ‘情’자 용례는 희로애락 등의 구체적 감정들을 직접적으로 지칭하는 『순자』, 『예기』 등의 ‘情’자 용례의 선구를 이룬다.

영문 초록

  Scholars in Chinese philosophy and Sinology usually interpret the ancient Chinese term "qing" as referring to either the facts about a certain situation or to the characteristic features (or even "essence") of a thing as belonging to a certain species, but they do not provide us with a satisfactory explanation of how the term "qing" so conceived could also refer to particular emotions like "joy," "anger," "sorrow," or "pleasure" in such texts as the Xunzi and the Liji. As I see it, the two instances of "qing" in the Analects well represent both the factual and emotional aspects of qing, and by analyzing relevant passages from the Guoyu I show that in addition to 1) facts and 2) characteristic features, qing can also refer to such things as one"s genuine opinions, desires and aspirations, or affective responses to diverse objects. This means that qing should be interpreted as "character" in the ethical context; and the instance of "qing" in Analects 13:4 makes one of the earliest cases in which qing can refer to emotions like desire and aversion as part of one"s character, thus letting us anticipate the more explicit use of qing for emotions in later texts such as the Xunzi and the Liji.
