Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word derived from two roots, "Ayus" and "vid", meaning life and knowledge respectively. Ayus, or life, represents a combination of the body, the sense organs, the mind, and the soul. The Vedas are ancient Hindu books of knowledge that are said to have been divinely revealed to the sages of India many thousands of years ago. Individuals forces are called "doshas", namely Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. They are considered simply as the inherent intelligence of the body.
Ayurveda lays a lot of emphasis on the preservation and care of imbalances. External massage therapy(Bahya snehana) is one of the Ayurvedic oleating therapy(Snehana). This massage therapy has the specific attributes to prevents and corrects aging process(jara) and helps a person to overcome fatigue(srama) because of routine hard work in life, prevents and corrects disorders caused by the affliction of the nervous system(vata), promote eye-sight(drsti prasada), help nourishment(pusti) of the body, promotes longevity(ayus) of an individual, helps the individual to get sleep(svapna), promotes sturdiness(dardhya) of the individual.
Abhyanga means massage. In general it means daily massage, or kind of massage the we do on a regular basis to maintain our health. Abhyanga as therapeutic massage is somewhat different in that is targeting an imbalance in the body and working directly to correct it. Therapeutic massage can also be directed towards the release of emotions and other stored impressions that inhibit our lives. In this form of massage it is of paramount importance that the esthetician understands the clients prakruti and vakruti, and that they themselves are in balance and are peaceful. They should have a good understanding of the marma points. This form of massage works to balance the three doshas and the five pranas through oils, herbs, the marmas, pacifying the senses, the touch used, and the technique used. It benefits all seven tissue levels and nourishes the whole body, mind and being if done correctly.
