The principal occupational cutaneous hazard for hairdressers is contact dermatitis. There is little information available regarding the prevalence of this problem, however. We examined the hand dermatitis from hairdressers according to clinical observation, patch test, and survey.
In patch test, nickel sulfate produced positive reactions in 7%, cobalt chloride in 10%, 3-aminophenol in 3% of the hairdressers tested. However, nickel sulfate produced positive reactions in 13%, cobalt chloride in 10% of the control tested. Of the hairdressers with a positive patch test result for nickel sulfate, the hand dermatitis from them not shown in present. Two hairdressers who reacted positively in cobalt chloride suffered from hand dermatitis which was not developed before having worked in the trade. In conclusion, occupational contact dermatitis in hairdressers is a common clinical dermatologic problem and improved worker education about the cutaneous risks of the occupation and appropriate simple cutaneous industrial hygiene measures may offer some hope of modifying the risk of developing skin disease.
