This study was conducted to examine the social support, self actualization and quality of social life to provide basic information for improving quality of social life pertinent to beauty parlor workers. The data were collected from 214 beauty parlor workers in nationwide Korea using self-administered questionnaire from April to June 2002. The following results were obtained.
1. The total mean score of social support examined by 4-likert scale was rated to be at 2.85. There were significant differences according to gender, religion, academic career, body mass index, sleeping hours, and income.
2. The total mean score of self actualization examined by 4-likert scale was rated to be at 2.88. There were significant differences according to age, marital status, body mass index, sleeping hours, working hours per day, rest days per months, job rank, and income.
3. The total mean score of quality of social life examined by 5-likert scale was rated to be at 3.27. There were significant differences according to academic career, sleeping hours and income.
4. There was significant positive correlation between social support, self actualization and quality of social life.
5. Multiple regression analysis showed that the significant affecting factors of social support were higher self actualization, possessing religion, female beauty parlor worker, that the significant affecting factors of self actualization were higher social support, higher BMI, lower working hours, and lower work careers, and that the significant affecting factors of quality of social life were higher social support and higher self actualization.
The results of this study imply that the programme of quality of social life for beauty parlor workers should be carefully invented and developed, especially considering beauty parlor characteristics of small service business.
