This paper focus on the view of the psychological comprehension and literary meaning of ‘loneliness’ and ‘love’ shown in Manboksajeopogi. For this purpose hero Yang’s aspect of loneliness and love has been analyzed first, then have seek out the erotism which had made hero Yang to discover the true meaning of love.
In this novels opening we could see that Yang has experienced the lack of object for devotion in his early childhood by not being accompanied with his parents in his early childhood. We can find Yang’s immature ego which has been developed by depriving the ability to stand by him-self and being left alone in the corner of Man-bok Temple. We can find a physical erotism when Yang met a woman that who was able to fill his lack of object for devotion and solve his problem of loneliness.
Through the separation of Yang and the woman, the author insists that solving one’s loneliness by the help of others has its limit. Mental erotism is being reflected by keeping the inconvenience of the short love and still having a strong desire toward each other.
In consequence, by Yang being left alone once again, departed by the woman, only treasuring the love that they have shared is the appearance of divine erotism. Trough Yang, the author shows that the discontinuity of the object of one’s love is being revival into continual object inside him. Having Yang being able to elevate the love, which has been left inside him, into a transcendental state and promoting his personality, in the end, one’s loneliness, is an existence and also a destiny.
In contrast to other novel written in Choseon Dynasty, this novel has an unique ending that the hero remains faithful to his deceased lover. The clue to analyze the authors intention for this kind of ending, it could be acquired by considering writers history of trying to be fidelity to King Dan-jong, who has been dethronement, and the circumstance of it"s time, in which the Grand Prince Su-yang usurp the throne. Kim Shi-seup may have intended to describe the circumstance of it"s period by comparing his fidelity to the maintaining hero Yang’s chastity in his novel. Even though it may be considered as an trifling love story by the noble birth"s of its time, it is very significant that hero Yang had loved "only one person" "everlastingly". This, the only one person, can be explained as a lover in erotic love story, but on the other hand also as a king or a nation in those historic situation. It means that the object decided to loved has to be "only one everlastingly". It may be a literary technique to reprove lots of politicians who had taken part in Grand Prince Su-yang throne usurpation accident.
