As one of the oldest professions, interpretation bridges two languages or two cultures for communication and today the demand for interpretation is higher than ever before amid ever-increasing international exchanges.
Interpretation teaching has been mostly conducted in professional interpretation schools. With the increasing demands for interpretation in society, however, colleges are beginning to offer interpretation courses for their undergraduate students. If professional schools interpretation teaching aimed to train interpretation skills is conducted in undergraduate courses, those courses will be difficult for the students considering their language abilities. But interpretation practices aimed to enhance language abilities will be useful for undergraduate foreign language courses taken by junior or senior students in particular. In addition, interpretation practices are important in that they can help students expand their general and current affairs knowledge and the practices are also closely related to the job abilities at workplaces.
Interpretation classes in undergraduate schools should be aimed at improving language abilities and they can employ such teaching methods as note-taking, sight translation, shadowing and consecutive interpretation. It is necessary to conduct further studies on interpretation curriculum and courses suited to the needs of undergraduate students that are differentiated from those of professional interpretation schools. With differentiated course offerings, language and literature students will be able to enjoy the benefits of more practical major education that can readily meet the needs of workplaces.
