Place-name words, as proper nouns are compound words. Therefore, this study regards place-name words as combination of morphemes. Place-name words consist of preceding place-name morpheme(PPM) and following place-name morpheme(FPM). The latter is an object of naming as a type of place names.
‘Bawi(rock)’, as following place-name morpheme is discovered in traditional place-names all around the nation. This study tries to examine morphological variation and alternation of ‘bawi’. This also contributes to consider the common characteristics of place-name words because ‘bawi’ that reflects history of phonome /k/ is shown as particular forms in traditional place-names of Chungnam Province. This shows not only the dialect of this area but also an alternative form of place-name worlds, which cannot be discovered in a dialectic forms. For example, ‘bawi’ has changed into ‘bae’ and ‘ba’.
First, the change from ‘bawi’ to ‘bau, bae, and ba’, and alternation of unmarked form ‘ø’ is the results of a motivation of a series of phonological process. Also, as alternative form of ‘bawi’, ‘dol(石)’, ‘dok(石)’, ‘dae(臺)’, ‘yeo(汝)’, and ‘seo(嶼)’ are shown. These are alternative forms that come from the attributes of a rock semantically.
In ‘Seondolbawi’, ‘Banseokbawi’, ‘ipseokbawi’ and ‘Haengambawi’, ‘-dol’, ‘-seok’, ‘-am’ mean ‘a rock’ but to strengthen or reinforce the meaning of ‘rock’, synonymous re-duplication is demonstrated. Therefore, ‘bawi’ in words such as ‘-dolbawi’, ‘-seokbawi’, ‘-ambawi’ is a duplicated morpheme that comes from synonymous re-duplication. Therefore, this study regards ‘seon (PPM) + dol = bawi (following place-name morpheme), Ban(PPM) + seok = bawi, yip + seok = bawi, and haeng + am = bawi’ as place-names. This shows the probability that synonymous re-duplication of place-name words makes ‘dol’ and ‘seok’, and ‘am’, Sino-Korean words reorganized as following place-name morpheme of ‘bawi’
‘Bawi’ as a following place-name morpheme, was alternated differently from a way of realization of dialects. However, the change from ‘bawi’ to ‘bau’, ‘bae’, and ‘ba’ and alternation of unmarked form ‘ø’ has a morphological motive and its alternation to ‘dol’, ‘dok’, ‘dae’, ‘yeo’, and ‘seo’ has its semantical motive, which comes from the attribute of ‘bawi’.
