渤海 外交文書의 實狀과 그 文體的 特徵

국문 초록

  본고는 발해(渤海) 외교문서의 실상과 그 문체적 특징을 검토한 것이다. 발해는 중국에 152회의 사절을 파견하면서 300여건 이상의 문서를 작성하였고, 일본에 34회의 사절을 파견하면서 최소한 100여건 이상을 작성하였다. 그러나 현존하는 문서는 중국에 보낸 표문(表文) 1건, 일본에 보낸 국서(國書) 16건ㆍ첩정(牒呈) 7건ㆍ기타 1건 정도에 불과하였다. 문서의 원형을 유지한 것은 하나도 없었고, 이를 문헌에 전사(轉寫)하면서 임의로 그 내용을 적출하여 동일한 양식의 문서가 문헌에 따라 서로 다른 내용 구성을 보이고 있다.
  발해의 외교문서는 문서 양식에 따라 작성 격식이 따로 있었고 문체도 제각각 달랐다. 하정표(賀正表)는 3단 구성에 완벽한 변려문체였고, 첩정(牒呈)은 변려문체에 산문체을 일부 가미한 문체였으며, 국서(國書)는 서간문 형식의 산문체에 변려문체를 일부 가미한 문체였고, 기타 별장(別狀) 등은 완벽한 산문체였다. 이와 같은 외교문서는 실용성에 기초하고 있었던 만큼 결구(結構)와 어휘(語彙) 상에 일정한 제약이 있었다. 그러나 현학적 용사보다 글자의 정교한 조합 방식을 선호하고, 화려한 문식(文飾)보다 질박하고 간명한 표현을 지향함으로써 평이하면서도 품격 높은 문장이 될 수 있었다.

영문 초록

  This paper is to examine the real states of diplomatic documents of Balhae(渤海) and the characteristics of their literary styles. Balhae dispatched 152 times of envoys to China and, for them, prepared more than 300 documents, while, to Japan, 34 times of envoys with at least 100 documents. However, existing documents are only one New Year Message(賀正表) to China, 16 Sovereigns Message(國書), 7 Official reports(牒呈) and one other to Japan. No document keeps its original shape. Even, the constitutions of same format documents vary from literatures, such differences were caused by voluntary abstractions of contents during transcription work.
  The diplomatic documents of Balhae(渤海) have respective drawing-up formalities as well as literary styles according to the document"s forms. New Year Message(賀正表) was three-paragraphed perfect Rhythmical Prose Style(騈驪文體), while Official reports(牒呈) was a Rhythmical Prose Style combined with some prose style. Sovereigns Message(國書) was letter writing typed prose style with some Rhythmical Prose Style and special report and others were complete prose style. Like this diplomatic documents, which pursue practicality in essence, had certain limits in their structures and vocabulary uses. But they could make plain and highly dignified compositions by preferring refined combination method to pedantic rhetoric and using unadorned and simple expression rather than rhetorical embellishments.
