영문 초록

  Canadian English has been called “a blend of British and American English,” but one may postulate that the English language spoken in Canada exhibits enough differences in vocabulary, syntax and pronunciation to distinguish it from both American and British English. Although it has much in common with both these English varieties, it appears to be something more than a mixture of the two. This paper discusses the so-called Canadianism(s) embedded in Canadian English which distinguishes from both Americanisms and Britishisms ever since an increasing number of Canadianisms began to appear with the close of the eighteenth century. Accordingly, the linguistic features of Canadianisms will be examined in terms of vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling, morphology and syntax, and some of the place-names in some detail to show how Canadian speech has tended to preserve a national identity against the enormous American influence on Canadian English.
