〈Wonjasiljeon〉 is a korean novel handwritten in 1883 and exists only one book. This is not a creative novel but an adapted novel from 〈Samsanbokjiji〉 in the second chapter of Chinese novel 〈Jeondeungsinhwa〉 for the social situation of late Joseon Dynasty.
〈Wonjasiljeon〉 has the plot that the hero goes to the world beyond from the real world and then comes back to the real world. At the beginning of the story, the hero Wonjasil, lives a rich life, but a thief robs of his whole fortune and he suffers from poverty. To get over the poverty, he asks a friend to repay the money he lent, but the friend does not repay the money to him. He deplores his misfortune, throw himself into a well in Mt. Sansin and goes in the world beyond. There in the world beyond Wonjasil watches people suffer severe punishments to wrongs of real life, comes back to the real world and tries to live up to Confucian ethics.
〈Wonjasiljeon〉 is not stories about hero"s whole life but events during a particular period. Complications of real life get less intense as changing to the story of the world beyond. It can be a common feature appeared in a Romantic story like 〈Geumosinhwa〉. Besides, it is noticeable that 〈Wonjasiljeon〉 shows a view of the world based on circular reasoning like punitive justice of Buddhism in order to emphasize practice of Confucian ethics in real life.
〈Wonjasiljeon〉 emphasizes importance of scholarly research and awakening of the ruling class. In order to correct social disorder of the late Joseon Dynasty, the author shows in the book that punishments for virtue and vice are realized in the world beyond. Especially, the author gives salience to a fine personality and learning of scholars who become the ruling class. On that score, 〈Wonjasiljeon〉 seems to be a instructional book containing Confucian ethics and worldly wisdom for scholars of the late Joseon.
