The purpose of the present study is to examine the interaction of Korean graduate students in an English-speaking environment as they are pursuing their academic studies at a university in the United States. This is a case study using an ethnographic approach to observe and interview the six Korean graduate students from various academic disciplines. Findings of the study indicated that one predominant barrier to verbal interaction in English with native speakers of English was caused from Korean participants’ limited listening proficiency. However, their listening proficiency did not uniformly influence their verbal interaction in English. Sometimes, the participants’ identities as competent graduate students or as peers influenced their intent to engage in verbal interaction with English-speaking interlocutors. When their positive identities were at risk or not properly recognized, they gave up interaction opportunities and remained silent. These instances were prevalent in on-campus situations. However, the same low-level listening ability did not impede their verbal interaction in business-like contexts as much as it did in school context. The way in which they interpreted power relations between native speakers of English and themselves was considered to be different in business-like situations and in other situations with native-speaking peers on and off campus.
