The concept of communicative competence appeared as a result of the inadequacy of Chomsky"s grammatical competence. Hymes(1972) insisted that we should acquire the knowledge of language use as well as grammatical competence in order to communicate effectively. With the arrival of communicative theory, we have changed the direction and method of our foreign language education from the study of grammatical competence to the enhancement of students" communicative ability, which made our foreign language education more diversified and exciting.
This study surveys some famous communicative theories such as Tarone (1980), Faerch and Kasper(1984), Poulisse(1990), D?myei(1995) who have guided the recent development of communicative theories. Especially I have focused on the achievement strategies of their communicative theories. and have analyzed the difference and characteristics of those strategies. Finally I analyzed our students" achievement strategy indirectly from the vocabulary quiz, using the achievement theory.
