Kim Kwang-gyun, who was well known as a modernism poet in 1930’s, emphasized the visual and pictorial trait more than the musical trait
His poetic languages and visual and pictorial technic have been placed high value in Korean poetry history, but have been criticised that it lacked the traditional emotion of modernism due to the sentimentality different from the intellectual and criticising-civilization attitude and the unfamiliar emotion different from traditional one of Korea. However, recently there is a positive evaluation that he succeeded in connecting modernism with lyricism of this country, he didn’t lose the modern trait, completing the traditional lyricism, and he tried the embodiment and succession of tradition of Korean modern poetry as a pioneer who, getting out of traditional lyric poetry, opened up the new form of the poetry world that drew ideas into concrete images.
With a view of Russian formalist’s defamiliarization, observing his esthetic sense about the new poetic languages that gave the readers the novel shock by expressing the familiar feeling unfamiliarly, a new way of reading poetry of Kim Kwang-gyun can be suggested.
Kim Kwang-gyun saw objects in his unique way. New poetic languages using the plosive sound group, the harsh rhythm using loan words, and the strange order of meaning structure in his poet ‘Chuilseojeong’ could be the defamiliarization of escaping automation and they expressed the reality cognition of city cultures as the unfamiliar images. He connected the poetic world and the imagination of movie through the defamiliarization technic using the montage style. Conflicting of different images in essence and integrating on a whole, this technic made readers undergo the esthetic experience rousing the new emotion.
Therefore, his poetry had an important meaning in the point of experiencing epoch-making possibility of modernism with various contents and forms. It is significant to approach the unfamiliar world and defamiliarization of his poetry with new explication by looking around about the method to imagine his eyes with reader’s eyes again, analyze the poetic rhythm, the symbolic trait of poetry, and the character of poetic structure elaborately, analyze the unique image structure and the imaginary order, and perceive and recognize them.
