‘Palace Apartment’ explores the changed consciousness of the 1970s which resulted from not only changes in family structure, especially the problems of the aged, but also middle class egoism and desire for the wealth.
The first half of this novel shows that materialism led to a new social problem, the alienation of old people. The worship of materialism is satirized through the viewpoint of the child narrator. Author, Park Wan-seo vividly portrays the attempt of the suicide of the Grandmother as a maladjustment to the alienation of the family and city life. Through the adult"s discourse, which is seen from the viewpoint of the child narrator, the novel thoroughly criticises the materialism which dominates modern industrial society and resulting family alienation.
The second half of the novel includes experiences of family alienation and symbolically represents the revived life consciousness as seeing the dandelion flower in bloom on the rooftop. The speaker ‘I’ does not want to live because he is alienated from his family due to the materialism which has affected his parents. The speaker ‘I’ understands why Grandmother did not want to live, and intends to kill himself. But after seeing the dandelion flower on the rooftop, the speaker ‘I’ wants to live and experiences the feeling of ‘life consciousness’ that fills him with awe and respect. The speaker "I" also thinks dandelion flowers will prevent Grandmother from the suicide attempt.
The speaker"s suggestion for planting dandelion flowers on the rooftop cannot prevent the suicide of the Grandmother nor is the proposal the universal answer to solve the alienation problem.
However, the suggestion includes the speaker"s emotional meaning because the illogical fantasies and poetic connotation which are shown in the novel keep the lyricism.
