In this thesis we compared two disloyal servants in a tale and a masque. And In this comparison, we have looked into the transmission and the meaning of the story. Now, we can draw some conclusions.
First, we can find common motives ?an inn and a horse- in both the tale “Kkoe-jaeng-i ha-in(꾀쟁이 하인)” and the masque “Malttuk- i gwa-jang(말뚝이 과장)”and confrontation and trouble of yang-ban and the humble. In addition, a milling woman, a monk and a merchant in a tale also appear in No-jang-gwa-jang(노장과장) of a masque. These subject matters help the organic constitution of incidents. But in a masque, they reveal the ethical limping of the common people and monks.
Second, the tale “Kkoe-jaeng-i ha-in” shows the mental distance of a hero and a transmission group. Especially, the mental distance narrows in the confrontation of the nobility and the servant. But it expands when the servant deceives the common people. In comparison with that, the masque “Mal-ttuk-i gwa-jang” brings into relief the trouble and the satire of the servant and yang-ban. It’s because a masque has dualistic consciousness of the vice and the contra-vice and the performers cover the various ruled classes.
Third, Mal-ttuk-i of a masque standsout as a character that speaks for the emotion of the people, and the transmission group makes him a hero to narrow the mental distance from him. We can say that Mal-ttuk-i’s intelligent speaking and his noble birth are for the heroization.
The modern transition period of these two stories was the time when the grade of ranks and traditional moral consciousness were broken down. Therefore, the related stories could be popular as a kind of cultural code and the disloyal servant’s story should be studied in such kinds of view.
