Throughout his entire life, William Carlos Williams has constantly been preoccupied by feminine and maternal themes. Williams strongly maintains that white males who have patriarchal perspectives should have positive feminine and maternal traits such as contact, touch, reconciliation and peace. He recognizes that white males" perverted prejudice on female denies female subjectivity and otherness. In addition, he also discovers that the lack of feminine and maternal traits brings barrenness to American culture and literature. Therefore, he denounces American poets such as Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot"s expatriation to Europe because of male dominance and European supremacy. Williams’ constant investigation on the feminine and maternal nature is closely related with his concern and preoccupation on flowers. Among his many objects of nature, flowers are used as the most suitable metaphor symbolizing maternal traits for Williams.
Unlike contemporary poets, Williams suggests feminine and maternal principles an alternatives to overcome patriarchal traditions through his essays and poems. He believes that male poets should have “supplying female” which is a primary source of fertility and a subversion of patriarchal ideologies. Therefore, he warns that without this “supplying female” male poets dry up their sources as expatriate poets did. In a sense, based on feminine and maternal principles, Williams can expand his poetic imagination. In this regard, I maintain that Williams" affection to feminine and maternal principles presents the direction of his poetics.
