Survey on the types of practical skills in physical education field which are tested by the departments of physical education in 17 universities in downtown Seoul in 1992 was conducted and analysis was made by classifying them into basic skill, sports skill, special skill and students with special skills to be classified as athletes and the following conculsions are reached.
1. In the test for basic skills 30 subjects were selected however 100m track was 58% with 10 universities and remaining subjects were less than 50% in terms of choice as test subjects. In terms of number of thest subjects 4 universities showed 23% for 6 subjects and 10 universities showed 59% for 5 subjects.
2. Only 6 universities conducted tests on sports skills. The number of test subjects were 6. On the other hand 6 universities t∞k the tests basketball, 4 universities on gymnastics and 3 universities conducted tests on volleyball, tracks and soccers.
3. One university conducted test on special skill and rest of universities confined the subjects of test within the range of 4-12 subjects. In terms of choice of test subjects gymnastics were 100%, basketball 92%, volleyball 85% and the rest of subjects were in the range of 70%-15%.
4. In the sector of selecting students with special skills to be classified as athletes it was revealed as follows: Among 653 selected in 29 subjects of tests at 18 universities majority of universities were selecting 121(18.5%) through 19 subjects of tests. Remainder of universities chose 87-1 students. In terms of test subjects it was 6 subjects and number of students were 434 or 66.5%. The subjects of test were mainly popular and collective subjects. In terms of number of students involved it was 125 for soccer, 112 for baseball and 85 for basketball. In terms of divisions of sports 14 universities conducted test on soccer, 12 universities on basketball and 10 universities on baseball.
As seen in the above the sports skill test for the department of physical education more emphasis is placed upon basic skills with focus on objectivity and safety. The current circumstances of limiting subjects of special skills and avoiding subjective testing indicate deviation from primary goal in physical education. Accordingly in future there should be more balance and harmony between basic skills, sports skills and special skills and subjects of practical skills should be improved so that those who are fitting to physical education should be selected. Furthermore the admission and graduation from universities and colleges should be trusted to self-determination and autonomy of the universities itself. When such practice is implemented the difference among the universities and colleges based on the relative advantages of a certain colleges or departments shall be disappeared.
