This study attempts to measure and classify a Dance major student"s, this includes Korean traditional, modern and ballet dancers, body type and physical fitness. Both dance students and regular students participated in the study. The study was broken down to specific characteristics of body type and physical fitness for each dance major type and then analysed for differences and how they compared to each other.
The purpose of this study is to offer a method to provide better instruction of aspiring dancers. It can help students, who aspire to be dancers, to choose an appropiate form of dance for their specific body type. In addition, dance students will be able to use this study as a form of reference.
A total of 60 female students, attending University K in Seoul, participated in the study. The majority of students attended the Physical Education and Dance Dept. They consisted of 15 Korean dance students, 15 ballet students, 15 modern students, as well as 15 regular students, who did not have any prior dance experience. The results of the study indicated the following findings:
A. Body Type
1. Length:
The modern dance students measured the longest in height(162.02±3.68) and in leg length(95.86±2.28). Korean dance students measured the longest in arm length(69.66±2.26), while ballet students scored the shortest for all three measurements.
2. Chest girth:
Korean dance students measured widest(80.20±4.72), while ballet students had the smallest measurements(77.20±3.75).
3. Weight:
Korean dance students weighed the heaviest(54.78±6.60), whereas ballet students weighed the lightest(52.33±4.92).
4. Form type index:
Korean dance students weighed in heaviest, both in body weight ratio(33.84±3.65) and in chest girth ratio(49.59±2.47). Ballet students scored the lowest weight, body weight ratio(32.37±2.40) and chest girth ratio(47.83±2.35).
Scores for the Rohrer"s index were highest for Korean dance students(29.33±12.50, while modern dance students scored the lowest(123.68±8.57). Scores for the Vervaeck"s index were highest for Korean dance students(83.43±5.57) and lowest for ballet students(80.20±4.03).
Regular students measured greater than dance students in all categories, weight, chest girth, and body form index.
B. Physical fitness:
1. Muscular strength:
Grip strength was strongest for Korean dance students(27.97±4.90), while it was weakest for modern dance students(22.36±5.90). Among these groups there was significantly(p<0.05).
Back strength was highest for modem dance students(29.87±9.51) and lowest for ballet dance students(26.20±7.39). Among these groups there was significantly(p<0.01).
2. Muscular endurance:
modern dance students performed the greatest number of situps(40.93±9.44) and longest flexed arm hanging(20.82±16.23). Korean dance students did the lowest number of situps(34.00±7.96) and shortedt flexed arm hanging(10.01±9.25). Among these groups there was significantly(p<0.01).
3. Power:
Ballet students scored highest in the Sagent jump(36.47±4.90) and in the standing broad jump(179.73±18.30). Korean dance students scored the lowest in the Sagent jump(33.79±6.40), whereas the modern dance students scored the lowest in the standing broad jump(166.66±19.66).
4. Balance:
Ballet students scored the highest(67.53±33.82) for balancing on one foot with their eyes closed, while Korean dance students scored the lowest(44.93±29.95).
5. Flexibility:
In doing a trunk flexion, modern dance students scored the highest(24.26±4.46). Ballet students scored the lowest(22.99±4.04). In trunk extensi
