Concerning the origin of Chinese archery, Chinese archeologists discovered a pair of stone arrowheads from remains of the Old Stone Age around Chiyokchon, Sakhyeon(present Sakju), Sanshi Province in 1963. The arrowheads were oldest stone tools in China. They were estimated made in the late stage of the age(about 2,800 years ago) when treasured using radioisotope. To investigate developments of Chinese archery, the study divided all the times of China into two. One covers Ha, Eun and Ju dynasties and the other, Ming and Ching. In the former times from Ha to Eun and to Ju, archery was made mainly of bronze and a symbol of masculinity. By reviewing Chinese historic records, the study also found that archery was a method of physical discipline in the Age of Civil Wars and that two generals, Gaeyeon and Jedong were famous as expert archers in the periods of Jin, Han and Three Kingdoms. In the periods of both Jins and South and North Dynasties, calvary and infant actions were main forms of battles, so arrow shooting while horsing was considered very important. In the period of Su, men and women enjoyed archery, irrespective of sex. But later men and women were dearly discriminated, so the latter carne to have little opportunity of shooting arrows. In the period of Song, archery was just a means of amusement. While in the periods of Yo, Geum and Won, archery was not only important to stock farming and hunting, but also inevitable for battle. In the periods of Ming and Ching, archery was an important part of the military service examination. The imperial court of Ching enjoyed archery as a pleasure while horsing, saying "benefits from archery and horsemanship stabilize the whole world". So far the study examined the origin and developments of Chinese archery by reviewing historic records of China. When its history and tradition are considered, Chinese archery were found socially important and much loved like Korean one.
