영문 초록

  This Study assesses whether strains have a major effect on adults" drug abuse and their effects can also be mediated by depression. In addition, this study tries to test relative efficacy between strain and other theories of drug abuse and also construct an integrated model. This study examines whether strain-drug abuse relationship is conditioned by several factors such as association with drug abusers, attitudes favorable to drug abuse, social bonds, self-control, self-esteem, and social support. Using 3,129 data including 2,500 adults in Seoul and other 6 metropolitan cities and 629 drug offenders, this study tests several hypotheses. Results show that the effect of negative life events on drug abuse is direct, even though the effect of role strain is relatively small and also mediated by depression. However, this study finds that the effect of life events, strain, and depression is less significant than association with drug abusers, attitudes favorable to drug abuse, and social bonding variable. Nevertheless, results reveal that the interaction effects of depression with other variables such as association with drug abusers and attitudes favorable to drug abuse is significant, which means that strain is an important factor in explaining adults" drug abuse and also need an integrated approach.
