영문 초록

  In this paper, I investigated Korean and Japanese verbal behaviors using questionnaires focusing on "requests．" The questionnaires were diversified into five different situations as the following:1) Borrowing a book from a person who had just bought the book, 2) Asking someone to find a job for the informant’s children or pupils, 3) Asking someone to purchase an insurance policy, 4) Borrowing money from someone, 5) Asking someone to put him/her up at their home. As a result, the following two characteristics of their “requests” were found: Asking to borrow money is more common for Koreans than Japanese, while asking someone to put him/her up at their home is more common for Japanese than Koreans. With respect to requesting something,　I was able to clarify their verbal behaviors as the following: Koreans,　 in their efforts to achieve goals,　proactively perform straightforward way of asking, while Japanese tend to perform roundabout way of asking, using apologetic expressions．
