This study is an effort to conceptualize the meaning and the conditions of 'field trip' and to develop educational discourse which can realize its nature.
It is usually said that field trip is conducted to complement and deepen classroom instruction. But Experiential learning by field trip have often confused with other notions, such as education by things, or visiting the specific places. So, I try to explore the epistemological basis of the experiential learning by field trip.
Teaching and learning in classroom has inevitable limitations because of the restrictiveness of place. It is almost impossible to express, prove and transmit the whole experienced of human being, because of contextual aspects of the experience. Likewise, it is also absurd expectation that only showing the specific things or places to the students would results in experiential learning.
The pivotal characteristics of experiential learning by field trip are identified to three: intentiveness by doing, contextual understanding, and reciprocal relation between the subject and the object. Actually, it is argued that the experiential learning by field trip is not a kind of learning but a learning itself in a strict sense.
