This paper is to examine Dewey's theory of growth as it appears in Democracy and Education in an attempt to view his educational philosophy from a lifelong education perspective. To sum up:
As a pragmatist Dewey emphasized the empirical basis of knowledge. He believed that it was folly to separate a phase in life from the whole of life itself. He says thus: education should not cease when one leaves school. The point of this commonplace is that the purpose of school education is to insure the continuance of education by organizing the powers that insure growth.
For Dewey, life menas growth, and education means the enterprise of supplying the conditions which insure growth, irrespective age. This explains Dewey's conception of education as a lifelong process. He puts the point: the ideal of growth results in the conception that education is a constant reorganizing or restructuring of experience. It has all the time an immediate end, and so far as activity is educative, it reaches that end.
Thus, what we can see in Dewey's educational philosophy is how facile it is to arrive at the rationale of lifelong education.
