This thesis is to discuss the matter of enlightenment, which has been frequently shown in the Korean New Novels and previous research papers on them, as a first step in my research on the paradigm of enlightenment shown in Korean modern literature. Such new ideas as 'modernity,' 'enlightenment,' and 'nation' emerged as new guiding principles to lead the society at the time that the Korean New Novels appeared. However, the enthusiasm for enlightenment interlocking with the crisis of the nation caused the abstract logic of reforming the national consciousness by modern ideology to be placed before the consideration of reality. Consequently, there existed a big gap between the realistic foundation and the ideological contention. Such a situation was expressed as the spread between a foreign idea of modernity and a conventional life based on Confucian customs. The spread between the Confucian values prevailing in a level of customs and the modern awakening in a level of ideology disclosed fictionality in the enlightening cause which was raised in such a state that the material foundation of a modern society was poor. In addition, the enlightening value of the Korean New Novels, which has been discussed in many research papers on them, was used as an important ground for determining its literary values. According to such papers, the values that the Korean New Novels have as literature in the literary history are determined by the code of confirmity with enlightenment: whether or not the historical recognition a novelist has is right in view of critics' comments on the historical situation in the society at that time. The historical recognition of a novelist is considered more important than the literary values of his work. Such a critical logic has finally resulted in spreading the paradigm of recognition, that is, an approach of literature from a deterministic point of view based on the ethical world view, throughout Korean literature.
