The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact feminism has had on the discipline of sociology in Korea. Since the mid-1970s when the feminist perspective was first introduced to the academic curriculum, feminist sociologists have made important contributions to the field of sociology. However, feminism has yet to transform the basic conceptual frameworks of this field.
Feminist writers raised four major criticisms about sociological research on women as well as expressed concern about the discipline's treatment of women sociologists. Critics charged that sociological research underrepresented women as subjects, concentrated on research topics more central to men's lives, utilized concepts, paradigms, methods, and theories favoring men, and deployed male experience as the prescribed norms in which all social experience would be assessed. Based on studies of sociology curriculums, published research, and the sex composition among sociologist during 1980-1999, it is quite obvious that some of the concerns articulated by critics were addressed in the curriculum or published work, and the concerns raised by others had little or only limited impact on the field.
Although there are indications that the field of sociology is on the upswing, and that the position are improving, gender boundaries still exist in the profession. For example, women are underrepresented in tenured professorships. Furthermore, intellectual boundaries also persist with men and women scholars often engaging in different sociological studies.
