This paper examines the personal background and the pattern of career development of women legislators in Korea. It is based on my fieldwork in Korea from 1985 to 1986. The sample consisted of 29 women legislators; seven of them were elected by popular votes while the rest were selected by the party leadership based on the proportional representation system. The primary method of data collection was semi-structured in-depth interviewing, which was supplemented by participant observations and historical documents.
The majority of the women of this study came from the middle-class background in terms of the wealth and social status of their natal family. The ratio of married women was much lower than that among the general public, indicating the difficulties for professional women to lead a normal marital life due to role conflicts. The educational level of women legislators set them apart as the eduational elite. The ratio of Christians among the sample was remarkably high, reflecting the influence of Christianity in the modernization processes of Korean society. The elected women legislators seemed to share certain personality traits, such as stubbornness, strong religious faith, courage, and oratorical facility.
The elected women legislators of the pioneer generation started their political involvement by participating actively in the national independence movement under the Japanese rule(1910~1945) . The elected women legislators of the second generation, whose personal experiences during the Korean War (1950~1953) heightened their political consciousness, received their political socialization by joining the political parties. For the majority of the women of this study, however, their participation in national politics came about unexpectedly. They were successful professionals who were chosen by the party leadership to represent women's interest.
The life histories of the women of this study underline the importance of the historical circumstances, personal experiences, and the political system in the participation of women in national politics.
