국문 초록

본 연구에서는 군대에서 남성 간 성폭력이 광범위하게 발생함에도 불구하고 사회문제화 되지 않았던 이유를 발생원인과의 관련성 속에서 확인해 보려고 한다. 군대 내 남성 간 성폭력은 남성성의 경쟁 속에서 진정한 남자를 만들려고 하는 군대라는 공간에서 이를 위한 수단으로 쉽게 동원된다. 그러나 일상적인 성폭력을 성폭력이라고 부르는 대신, 장난이나 친밀감으로 미화시키는 가해자 중심논리가 군대사회의 특수성인 위계의 엄격함 속에서 더 깊게 뿌리박혀있다. 성폭력의 피해자가 되는 것은 이러한 남성성의 경쟁에서 패배자임을 인정하는 것이고 동성애자로도 낙인이 찍히기 쉽다. 또한 군대에서 계급적 우열관계에 의해서 빚어지는 성폭력의 피해, 가해의 경험이 일반 사회에서 약자를 주로 구성하는 여성에게 어떤 형태로 전환될 것인지에 대해 우려하게 한다. 따라서 군대 내 남성 간 성폭력에 대한 연구는 남녀차별과 성폭력의 발생을 막아나가는 데 있어 군대가 지향하는 남성성에 대한 연구가 중요함을 확인하게 한다.

영문 초록

This research is to shed light on the reasons for public mutedness on male on male sexual violence in the military, and proposes to analyze the causes for its prevalence throughout the military. Male on male sexual violence in the military is a multi-faceted matter. First, sexual violence is invited as a tool in competing masculinity, and in producing, so called, a 'real man' in the military. It discourages victims in speaking out since doing so may mean becoming a 'loser' in the competition of masculinity, and for them to acknowledge that in fact they are not 'real' men. Second, there is a strong tendency to rationalize sexual violence as closeness or a harmless mischief in the military. The perpetuator-centered perspective is deeply rooted in the hierarchy that characterizes the military. Third, in the military where homosexual activities are punishable, the fear of being labelled as a homosexual keeps the victims from reporting the sexual violence. Upon return to civilian life, young men who have experienced the sexual violence in the military, either as a perpetuator or a victim, are likely to reenact the experience against women as a perpetuator. It is critical to note that the masculinity in the military - and how it is practiced and engendered - should be a major concern for feminists in dealing with gendered inequality and sexual violence.
