영문 초록

Sol In-gwi chon is a story about a Chinese General, Xue Ren-gui(薛仁貴, 614∼683). The stories about Xue Ren-gui and his family were very popular in China, especially in Ming and Ching dynasty. It was about the eighteenth century when the story of Xue Ren-gui was introduced in Korea. At the early stage, some Korean readers who could understand Chinese character might have read this novel in Chinese, but after a while there came out a translated version. And with this translated one, some adapted version was published. The block print versions of the novel with almost the same title and contents were generally abridged from the former version. However, the two copies of block print version Sol In-gwi chon that I have seen - 30 leaves in Paris and 40 leaves in Saint Petersburg - were not the case. They seemed to be published in the middle of the nineteenth century and were all adapted version. Although both copies have the same title and story, the words and the phrases were quite different. The reason for this case might be because they were abridged independently from the same adapted version by different publishers.
