영문 초록

The name of the main character So Dae-seong in implies a person who would be able to bring glory to the royal family history. The name gives us a clue to understanding the roots of the plot. Naming a person in accordance with certain rules and telling the person's fortunes by analysing the name are part of cultural practices in Korea. The objective of this study is to examine the principles behind the creation of from the name numerology point of view. First, this essay examines the life cycle of a person whose name is So Dae-seong based on the name interpretation. So Dae-seong is destined to go through an ordeal in his childhood such as growing up in an unhappy family, experiencing a breakup of a couple and dying young. In adolescence, he would obtain authority and fame by achieving a great work. So Dae-seong, in his middle age, would clean up the past and make a new progress and then, he would enjoy health and longevity with everything going well in his later years. Next, this essay draws a comparison between the life of the main character So Dae-seong described in the and the above mentioned life cycle, which is based on the analysis of the name So Dae-seong in general. The hero in his childhood faces parents' deaths and hard time in a foreign land, being almost murdered by a thug and the separation of a couple, all of which are consistently related to the fortunes determined by the name. His rise to the throne of the No Dynasty in his youth following the victory in the war with an enemy's country represents the self-made man in the fortunetelling based on the name. contains the story of the hero in his childhood and adolescence, so it can be said that the work describes the first half of the destiny of a person whose name is So Dae-seong according to the name analysis. Lastly, the second half of the story can be found in . Since So Dae-seong's childhood and adolescence are written in the and his middle age and old age are described in , the two works are not separate from each other and the latter is a second volume of the former. These examinations make it possible to estimate that the writer of the or had good knowledge of the name numerology, so he could choose a name for the hero in line with the life story unfolded in his work, or he used the story at different stages of life obtained from the name interpretation to create a novel. In conclusion, it is possible to understand the principles behind the creation of Korea's ancient novels by taking a look at local cultural custom such as nameology.
